Als ein in den englischen und internationalen Kanon integrierter Autor ist Edward Morgan Forster und sein literarisches Schaffen Objekt in zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Studien und Sekundärtexte. In der vorliegenden Arbeit konzentriere ich mich auf einen intermedialen Vergleich seines Romans A Room with a View (1907) und dessen filmische Umsetzung der Merchant-Ivory Production 79 Jahre später. Der Film löste durch seinen Erfolg eine erneute und intensivierte Rezeption des Werkes aus, daher ist auch die Forschungssituation des Romans, der Verfilmung und deren Wechselbeziehung als gut untersucht einzustufen. Äußerst umstritten in der Literaturkritik und in wissenschaftlichen Studien ist vor allem die erotische Auslegung von A Room with a View. Der Thematik der Erotik und besonders der homoerotischen, da er zu den wenigen bekennenden homosexuellen Schriftstellern seiner Zeit zählt, wurden etliche Studien gewidmet, unter anderen gaben unter diesem Aspekt Robert K. Martin und George Piggford den Sammelband Queer Forster heraus. Die dualen Lesarten von Forsters Werken und Filmadaptionen haben auch bei seiner filmischen Gattungsbestimmung als Heritage Cinema Diskussionen ausgelöst, wie man bei Higson die Problematik der Subtilität und konträren Interpretationen erkennen kann:
Then there is the question of sexuality. Most commentators, left and right, have seen heritage films as chaste by comparison with the sexual explicitness of mainstream popular cinema (for those on the right, this is part of their charm, for those on the left, a symptom of their ‘body-hating’ repression). […] According to Monk, woman and gay men in particular enjoy these films and appreciate the star appeal of their mostly young mal and female leads. Somewhat perversely, Monk sees A Room with a View, ‘simmering with feminine, queer and ambiguous sexualities’, as the most liberating film in this respect […] This does seem perverse since Room had so enraptured conservative commentators–and should therefore be seen as yet another instance of the diversity of interpretations inspired by these films. Diese Arbeit wird sich Monks „perverse“ Meinung als Ausgangsbasis annehmen, sie weiterführen und in Roman und Film unter dem erotischen Aspekt zu analysieren.

In this thesis I concentrate on a intermedial comparison of his novel A Room with a View (1907) and its filmic adaptation of the Merchant-Ivory Production1 79 years later. Due to its success the film led to a refreshed and intensive reception and for this reason the situation of research according to the novel, the filmic adaptation and their relations are well researched. Very intensive and conflicting is the erotic interpretation in the critics and studies. Numerous studies are dedicated to the erotic and especially the homoerotic theme, for example Robert K. Martin’s und George Piggford’s miscellany Queer Forster. The duality of Forster’s works and filmic adaptions released also discussions concerning the fixation to the genre Heritage Cinema, as Higson the problems of subtlety and contrary interpretation shows (citation up).
This thesis will base on Monks „perverse“ opinion, continue it and analyses the novel and the film under the erotic aspect.
